Backflow testing FAQs

Questions about backflow testing

Questions Cedar Crest, NM property owners ask about backflow testing and backflow prevention.

Talk to a person
How often does a backflow preventer need testing in Cedar Crest, NM?
Most water utilities require a test once a year. Many also require one at installation, after any repair and after the device is moved. Your utility's notice letter gives the exact due date.
What happens if I miss the backflow test deadline?
Utilities usually send a second notice, and after that some add a fee or schedule a service shutoff. Calling (833) 990-5874 before the deadline is the simplest way to avoid it.
How long does a backflow test take?
A residential PVB or double check test usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. Large commercial and fire line assemblies take longer.
Will my water be off during the test?
Yes, briefly. The tester closes the shutoff valves on the assembly while reading the checks, so water downstream of the device is off until the test is done.
Is fire sprinkler backflow testing different?
Yes. Along with the standard check valve test, NFPA 25 calls for an annual forward flow test on fire line backflow assemblies. Results often go to both the water utility and the fire authority.
